Replacing Your Gate Beams

How to replace the card gate beams in the PhyzBatch-9000 (3d Print Model)

If your gate beams become damaged, your gate will need to be replaced.  Check for cracks in the beam, which could cause the gate to shift during operation.  Gate parts are not included initially, so before starting this procedure contact Support for assistance.

The replacement of a gate and/or beam can be a very involved process.  If at any time you are uncomfortable with performing the procedure, swapping the scanner unit is also an alternative.

Upper Beam

Lower Beam

Upper Beam

The upper beam is the easiest of the two to replace:

  • Unplug the scanner
  • Remove the extended hopper if installed
  • Remove the top casing from the scanner (2mm Allen key), plus two more screws.

  • Pull out the plastic tray covering the front of the gate.
  • Remove all horizontal screws from the gate assembly (2.5mm Allen key).

Be careful not to drop any screws into the chassis.  On the right side especially they can fall down inside and can be quite difficult to remove.  If one does fall inside, do not plug in the scanner until the screw has been retrieved.

  • Loosen the top screws until the top beam pulls off of the bottom one (2.5mm Allen key).

  • Replace the beam, then reassembled the unit, horizontal screws first, then vertical.  Make sure to include the washers, as they help prevent the beam from cracking.
  • The gate will need to be calibrated.

Lower Beam

Replacing the lower beam (or both) requires removing most of the scanner from its housing.

  • Unplug the scanner
  • Remove the scanner from the sorter and the extended hopper, if installed.
  • Remove the top cover over the gate

  • Remove the side housing of the sorter by removing the following screws:

It is possible to access the four screws holding the bottom beam without removing the casing, but the space available is very small.  Removing the casing is easier and recommended.

  • Remove the following four screws, two each on the front and back of the scanner

  • Remove the following three screws, located under the scanner bay door

  • Flex the sides of the sorter outwards (black) and pull the scanner body away from the housing.  The objective is to angle the top away from the housing to get easier access to the two screws holding the gate beam on the scanner bay door side.

    • To get the back right corner out (when facing the hopper), flex the front side of the scanner outwards until the right corner comes loose

  • Remove the following four screws (two on each side).  These screws are what hold the lower beam to the chassis.

  • Replace the lower beam and reinstall it into the chassis with the four side screws
  • Reinstall the upper beam, with horizontal screws first.
  • Reinstall the sorter into the chassis and put all the screws back in for the main housing.
  • Reinstall the side casing.
  • Reinstall the scanner back onto the conveyor
  • Recalibrate the gate
  • Plug the sorter back in and run a test sort, fine-tuning the gate height if necessary
  • Reinstall the plastic cover, top cover plate over the hopper, and extended hopper.
